Equine Reiki for Horses in South Carolina: What It Is and How It Helps
If you’ve heard of equine Reiki and thought “okay but what actually is that,” you’re not alone.
Reiki can sound a little out there at first, especially in the horse world where we are used to thinking in terms of muscles, tack, and training.
But here’s the simple and easy to understand version.
Equine Reiki is a form of energy work that supports relaxation, pain relief, and nervous system regulation in horses. I offer Reiki for horses in South Carolina and Georgia, both in person and through distance sessions.
What Is Equine Reiki
Equine Reiki is a hands on or distance based energy practice that helps bring the body into a more balanced state.
It is not about forcing change. It is about allowing the horse’s system to settle enough to release tension.
Most of the time, what we are really working with is the nervous system. Which is a HUGE part of overall wellness. Have you heard that stress can cause this that and the other? I know you have! It is the #1 complaint when going to the Doctor. You say “ I’m exhausted every single day” and the Dr Says you must be anxious or stressed you should work on that.
How Reiki Works for Horses
A horse (or humans) cannot fully relax or heal if their nervous system is stuck in stress.
This is why you can:
do bodywork
change the bit
adjust training
…and still feel like something is not fully resolving.
Reiki supports the parasympathetic nervous system. This is the state where the body can rest, process, and release.
When a horse shifts into this state, you will often see:
softening through the body
slower breathing
licking, chewing, yawning
a calmer overall presence
For example, I had a client named Zoie who was actually a donkey! She struggled to let go of tension being of how stoic she is. So I could do massage all day long with no real change… but then I started doing a blend of Craniosacral therapy and Reiki and WOW what a change! She went from tight faced, airplane ears, sad expression, to following me around and braying when I showed up for her monthly session. Just ONE session had a huge shift change for her and she mad so much progress so much faster.
Signs Your Horse May Benefit from Reiki
Not every issue is physical in the way we expect.
Some common signs I see include:
tension that keeps coming back
sensitivity to touch
reactivity or overreaction
difficulty focusing under saddle
feeling inconsistent ride to ride
A lot of these get labeled as training issues.
Many of them are actually nervous system related.
What Happens During an Equine Reiki Session
Every horse is different.
Some will stand still and relax right away. Others will move, process, or take a few minutes to settle.
There is no forcing. I like horses tied loosely or loose when possible.
The goal is to give the horse space to regulate.
Sessions can be done:
in person in South Carolina and Georgia
or through distance Reiki sessions
Distance Reiki for Horses
Distance Reiki allows your horse to receive the same support without needing me physically there.
This is helpful for:
horses in different locations
horses that are difficult to handle
ongoing support between bodywork sessions
Many owners still report clear changes in relaxation and behavior.
One great example is a client of mine who had distance Reiki done before she rode her horse off property bitless for the first time. The next day, the horse who used to bolt off was really calm, receptive, and had breaks. The owner was unable to use a bit at the time due to some teeth getting pulled causing some fear response with the geldings mouth, and since has not really gone back! I regularly support this owner and her horse with distance sessions and they recently competed in an endurance ride !
Does Reiki Work for Horses
Yes, Reiki can support relaxation, reduce stress, and help regulate the nervous system.
Research in humans shows reductions in pain, anxiety, and stress levels. While research in horses is still growing, the physical and behavioral responses we see are consistent.
Horses relax. They release. They change.
How Reiki Works With Bodywork and Bit Fitting
Most of the horses I work with are not coming in only for Reiki.
They are coming in for bodywork or bit fitting first.
We address the physical side, but sometimes the tension is still there.
That is where Reiki becomes the missing piece.
It helps the body actually let go of what it has been holding onto.
