Equine Bit & Bridle Fitting
What Is Bit Fitting?
Bit fitting is the process of selecting a bit that actually fits your horse’s mouth anatomy and allows for clear, comfortable communication.
Most bits are chosen based on discipline, tradition, or what a trainer prefers.
Very few are chosen based on:
tongue space
bar sensitivity
palate height
oral structure
A properly fitted bit allows the horse to:
soften into contact
move more freely through the body
respond with less resistance
Signs Your Horse Needs a Bit Fitting:
Your horse doesn’t need to be “bad” to need a better bit.
Common signs include:
head tossing
leaning or pulling
inconsistent contact
opening the mouth
difficulty bending
bracing in transitions
going behind the bit
These are often labeled as training issues…
…but they are frequently comfort issues first.
How The Bit Affects The Whole Body:
The mouth connects directly to the rest of the body through:
the jaw
the hyoid apparatus
the neck and topline
When the bit doesn’t fit:
tension travels through the body
movement becomes restricted
performance suffers
This is why bit fitting often creates changes far beyond the head and neck.
What to Expect
A session includes:
evaluation of your horse’s mouth anatomy
assessment of current bit and tack
observation of movement and contact
discussion of what your horse is showing
recommendations based on fit and function
Try new bits and see how it feels
I do bitless fittings as well!
It is based on anatomy, biomechanics, and the horse’s response.
Why My Background in Bodywork Matters
Bit fitting should never be just about the bit.
As a bodyworker, I’m not only looking at the mouth. I’m looking at the entire horse. The jaw, the poll, the hyoid, the neck, the shoulders, and how all of that connects to the rest of the body. Including the hind end.
If a horse is tight through the poll or restricted through the jaw, no bit is going to “fix” that.
If the tongue can’t move, the body can’t move the same.
If the horse is compensating somewhere else, the bit often gets blamed when it’s really a whole-body issue.
This is why my fittings are different.
I’m assessing movement, tension patterns, compensation, and how the horse is physically able to carry the bit. I use bodywork techniques when needed to help release restrictions so the horse can actually respond to the change, instead of just coping with it.
It becomes a whole horse experience, not just a tack change.
Because when the body is comfortable, we can get real feedback from the horse. Not just covering it up with expensive equipment.
